What is LCC27?

LCC27 stands for Leisure Cylinder Connection Type 27. It's the new valve and hose fitting replacing the older POL (Type 21) connection on Australia's 4kg and 9kg "leisure" gas cylinders — the ones used for barbecues, patio heaters, and similar low-pressure outdoor appliances. It does not apply to 45kg cylinders or natural gas.

The changeover has been staged since 2021, and as of 1 April 2022, all new BBQs and outdoor gas appliances sold in Australia must come fitted with the new LCC27 hose connection. Existing 9kg cylinders are being converted to the LCC27 valve as they come up for their 10-year retest, so the change is gradually working its way through every gas bottle in circulation.

Why the change? It's about safety.

The LCC27 fitting was introduced with genuine safety improvements over the old POL connection:

• Back-check valve — gas won't flow at all unless the hose is properly connected and tightened. No more accidental leaks from a loose or disconnected hose.
• Thermal cut-off — if there's a fire near the cylinder, the valve automatically stops gas flow.
• Larger handwheel — easier to grip and tighten securely, particularly helpful for anyone with reduced hand strength.
• More durable seal — the rubber seal sits inside the valve, so it's less prone to wear and less likely to need replacing.

What this means for your gas bottle and BBQ

• Old gas bottle + new BBQ hose (LCC27): these won't connect. You'll need to swap your cylinder for an LCC27 one at a gas swap point.
• New gas bottle (LCC27) + old BBQ hose (POL): this still works — the new cylinders are backwards compatible with older appliance hoses.
• Adaptors: using an adaptor to connect a new LCC27 appliance to an old POL cylinder is not permitted and is a genuine safety risk — the threads run opposite ways, which can cause leaks.

If your BBQ or gas heater is due a hose replacement, or you've picked up a new appliance with an LCC27 fitting, the simplest fix is swapping your cylinder over the next time you're due for a refill — most swap-and-go points are already supplying LCC27 bottles as standard.

It's not just BBQs — check your main gas regulator too

Plenty of Redlands homes run their whole gas supply off a 9kg cylinder duplex or switchover system at the main regulator, not just a bottle for the BBQ. If your property's gas supply — cooktop, hot water, heating — runs off 9kg cylinders at the regulator, the same LCC27 changeover applies there too.

That means:

• The hose connecting your 9kg cylinders to the main regulator at the property needs to match — LCC27 valve to LCC27 hose, or an LCC27 cylinder connecting to an older POL hose (which still works).
• If you're getting your cylinders swapped or refilled and they come back with the new LCC27 valve, it's worth having a licensed gasfitter confirm the regulator setup and hose at the same time, especially if your installation is older.
• This is a whole-property gas supply, not a portable appliance — so it's worth having it done properly rather than assumed to be compatible.
